The refuge Coma de Vaca was built during summers of 1998 and 1999, in order to replace the old and deficient free refuge. It is property of the "Fundació d'entitats excursionistes de Catalunya" and has been financed by the Government of Catalonia and the Sport Department of Spain.
It is located at 2000 m in the Eugues plain, where the Freser river and the Vaca river converge. The refuge is located in the surroundings of the little village of Queralbs (in the Ripollès County).

The old refuge named Manelic, and the shepherd's hut, 4th August 1998. A first view of the food to feed the workers.
Demolition starts. But before we had to set up a base camp with tents, where the workers lived during summer and fall 1998.
Starting the foundations, all made with pick and shovel.
The building of a wall to bury the septic tank.
In this picture you can see how the refuge is "growing"

The working conditions were very hard due to the mountain weather and because the workers could not use the normal tools that they use to have for construction. As an example you can observe the two pictures below where the wind destroyed the base camp and working in the middle of the fog with bad weather, in a race agaibst against the time, trying to cover the refuge before the winter arrives. We would like to thank all the people who helped to build this mountain refuge.

Finally the work starts inside the refuge. Every day brings better facilities. One day we have light, another water, next day heater…Great!

End of November 1998. With the roof on the top and the shutters hanging, we finished the first part of the construction. We conclude work on May 1999.

Some days later, on October 1998, we inaugurate the refuge with our first guests..
